This comparison with Ari Fleischer is especially noteworthy:

McClellan's ineptitude is made all the more noticeable by the contrast it poses with Ari Fleischer, his syrup-tongued predecessor. Fleischer could spin elaborate webs of obfuscation, leaving the press corps mystified and docile, albeit somewhat resentful as well. Every sentence he uttered came out in the same bored affectation. The most outrageous lie sounded, in his telling, like a truism so obvious it barely deserved mentioning. Most people find such behavior deeply unnatural. When asked a direct question, our natural impulse is to answer it honestly. The capacity to do otherwise is useful for any press secretary but particularly so for the current administration, whose domestic agenda has never commanded popular support and which relies heavily upon secrecy and message discipline. Fleischer was in this sense the perfect Bush press secretary. His ability to prevaricate and dodge, without betraying himself through physical or verbal tics, represented a kind of genius. Alas, what came so easily to Fleischer utterly eludes McClellan. If the two of them ever sat down at a poker table, Fleischer would probably walk away with all of McClellan's money and the shirt off his back.

In a certain sense, this is to McClellan's credit: He's not a natural liar. Some of the best insight into the psychology of deceit can be found in the works of playwright and director David Mamet. In Mamet's 1983 play Glengarry Glen Ross, weak-willed insurance salesman George Aaronow tells consummate pro Ricky Roma, "When I talk to the police, I get nervous." "Yeah. You know who doesn't?" Roma replies. "Thieves." Fleischer had the soul of a thief. McClellan doesn't. Indeed, all the White House reporters I spoke with went out of their way to praise him as a human being, especially in contrast with Fleischer. "Scott is, at core, an honest man, and Fleischer is, at core, a dishonest man," one puts it. "[McClellan] has a real handicap in this [job] in that he's a decent guy."

One of my secret wishes is to be a press secretary. But then I watch McClellan and give it a second and third thought. But then again, I would hope that I wouldn't attach myself to a politician for whom the ability to lie is at such premium.

Dennis Miller, Major-League Asshole

Well, I for one cannot wait for the latest entry from Eric Alterman, after the disgraceful performance by Dennis Miller last night. Eric has every reason to completely pissed off, and hopefully he is. I say that, because I don't think you just shrug off treatment like that. It has been difficult enough to get a message like Eric's out, and to have to deal with Miller's behavior is just ridiculous.

After Alterman gave a intro about his book and his point of view on Bush, Miller began a commenting on the way Alterman was sitting in his chair. When Alterman finished his comment, Miller turned to the camera and ended the segment.

I can't call for a boycott of Miller, because the only reason I was watching his show was to see Alterman. It was a disgraceful performance, but it was also completely consistent with the course that Miller has decided to take politically.

For his part, Alterman agressively pushed his views of Bush, and hopefully a few of Miller's viewers, and there are only a few, eyes were opened.

Now I could say that if the liberal blogosphere had helped me with my attempt to start a email campaign to push for a show for Alterman, (thanks by the by to Bob at LiberalOasis for his help), we might have been watching "Altercation - The TV Show". Powell made Kerry's point of law enforcement vs military as far as terrorism.

The President…made it clear right after 9/11 that we all have to come together and go after these kinds of organizations:

Sometimes with military force, more often with law enforcement activities, intelligence activities, going after their financial infrastructure… [emphasis added]

This is the essence of Kerry's argument. Defense had done the same, examining military options and how to secure the country after a coup or an invasion. Treasury was attempting to seal off the borders to transactions--all but impossible--by pressuring banks in Jordan and Syria to avoid doing business with Saddam. Each cabinet member spoke in an order and on a subject that had been designated in advance. At one point, Bush asked Rumsfeld to comment on something Powell had just said, but that was the extent of the interaction. When George Tenet gave his report on intelligence--it was still only speculation, he told Bush, whether Hussein had weapons of mass destruction or was starting any weapons-building programs--Rumsfeld, looking at the many aides lining the walls, interjected, "I'm not sure everyone here has clearance to hear this."

The President nodded. "Okay, let's get into it at another time."

But despite the concern about clearance, there was little to tell or to hear. O'Neill had reviewed a pile of CIA intelligence dossiers prior to this meeting. "Everything Tenet sent up to Bush and Cheney about Iraq was very judicious and precisely qualified. The President was clearly very interested in weapons or weapons programs--and frustrated about our weak intelligence capability--but Tenet was clearly being careful to say here's the little that we know and the great deal that we don't. That wouldn't change," O'Neill recalled, "and I read those CIA reports for two years."

Emphasis his.

Just a thought...

One of the Repub defenses for initiating this war was that Saddam never told us what happened to the left over weapons. Whether they had been destroyed or not. Well, what it they had been?

Remember Saddam's document dump? One of the requirements of Resolution 1441 was that Iraq had to declare all of its weapons capabilities. Iraq dumped volumes of documents on, I believe, the UN. At the time, everyone was very critical of the documentation. I remember several administration members, including Powell I believe, saying that these documents were not credible. Well, what if they were?

What if those documents were absolutely correct about Iraq's capabilities? Everyone, including me, simply assumed that Iraq had at least some chemical or biological weapons. We let our assumptions get in the way of impartially analyzing that data. The documents concluded that Iraq had no WMD.

I heard a caller on a local talk show comparing the situation to a policeman that was telling a suspect to drop his weapon, and finally shooting him for not doing so. Listening to this guy, it occurred to me that the suspect did show that he had no weapon. When that happens, the policeman usually goes to jail.

If those documents were correct, and it seems that they were, then what now?

We asked for their current capability, and then when they gave it to us, we let our assumptions cloud our view. Bush, a Republican, and GOP state lawmakers pushed through a $187 million tax cut for business five years ago, despite warnings that such a move could leave the state account that pays unemployment benefits dangerously low if a recession struck. Bush dismissed such predictions as "fuzzy headed."

But they proved ominously correct. Last October, with Florida's sluggish economy pushing the cost of jobless benefits near an all-time high, the money in the unemployment account dropped to the lowest point in nearly a decade. That triggered an automatic tax increase legally required to keep the fund from going broke

A similiar problem occurred with a bill that allowed the phone companies the ability to increase their rates. Gov "Brother of Shrub" argued that the phone companies would be constrained by market forces and competition. According to her WSJ OpinionJournal column, "... it's hard to avoid the thought that reporters don't really like Mr. Dean".

The hair on the back of every Democrats neck should now be doing the twist. Dean should take this column and wave it around at every press conference, and should challenge the press by asking why do they cover a Presidential campaign as though it were a high school election.

Update: I missed a 'graph.

Someone said of Mr. Gephardt recently that he always looks like he has a fever. I laughed when I heard this because it's true. But he also looks like a man who's calm, stable, mature and experienced. Mr. Kerry continues to look like a sad tree, which is a challenge because his face and demeanor are at odds with his message and determination. But he too is mature and experienced. They've both been through a life in major-league politics--they've been through the shakedown cruise, they've been frisked and fisked. As for Mr. Edwards, he is distinguished by a certain cheerful cool and discipline, He's positive, he doesn't get down in the muck, and somehow in pictures he's always looking up, unlike Mr. Dean, who somehow is always looking down from a stage. True, no one's tried to kill Mr. Edwards yet, which would account for some of his cheeriness, but he does seem to have the right happy-warrior disposition. Any of these three could give George W. Bush a run for his money. (Mr. Clark, I'm afraid, seems even stranger than Mr. Dean. We'll talk about him soon.)

Thanks Nooner, but no thanks.

Continuing Health Care Crisis

Bob Herbert of the NY Times continues to be one of the most socially aware columnists in America. Today he is tackling the Bush Administration's near malfeasance concerning health care for the poor and middle class.

The money quotes:

It seems extremely strange that in the United States of America, the richest, most powerful nation in the history of the world, we are going backward in the 21st century in our ability to provide the most fundamental kinds of health care to ordinary people, including children.

The health insurance cutbacks would have been even worse if not for the $20 billion in emergency state aid that was reluctantly approved by the Bush administration and the Republican-led Congress last year. Despite the economic upturn, states are still struggling. They face a collective budget deficit of $40 billion to $50 billion for the coming fiscal year, and there is little sentiment among Republican leaders in Washington for another round of fiscal relief.

Maybe the nation itself needs a doctor. In discussing Bush, he never mentions the impact of the tax cuts on the deficit, nor does he discuss Democratic opposition to those cuts based on their impact on the deficit.

All in all, not a very honest article.

Shout It from the Rafters

Star Tribune Editorial: Dean's truth/Saddam didn't threaten U.S.

I haven't decided whether I am a Dean guy or not, I tend to lean more towards Clark, but I believe this editiorial from the Star Tribune needs to be sent to every pundit who is vaccuous enough to say that while Dean is absolutely right, he is still open for ridicule and attack.

Sidney's Red Meat

Sidney Blumenthal serves up red meat for liberals in The Guardian.

This is a must read as it more accurately reflects the feelings of we liberal Democrats then anything else that I have read.

Gore Disloyal? Bah!!

Richard Cohen's WaPo column, A Class Act, Betrayed accuses Al Gore of betraying Joe Lieberman. On November 19, 2000, Lieberman appeared on "Meet the Press", and sabotaged the Gore recount effort. He stepped away from the Gore team view that absentee ballots, including military, should be given the same scrutiny that Republicans were demanding of regular ballots, that is, that improperly completed ballots should be tossed. After Lieberman's appearance, the Gore team couldn't pursue this completely appropriate strategy. In a Washing Monthly article, Mensch at Work", Noam Scheiber documents various other ways in which Lieberman's actions undermined the Gore campaign, such as simultaneously running for Senate while a VP candidate. Cohen and others view Lieberman's pledge to not run if Gore ran as some type of grand sacrifice. But Lieberman continued to campaign after giving his pledge, undercutting the sincerity of it.

The same reporters who propagated the CW that Gore was a pathological liar are now mounting the same horse to pounce on him for betraying Lieberman.

We've seen this show before.

Couldn't the AP photographer have waited for the hand to come down?

Is Brooks Talking About Dean or Bush?

David Brooks' NYTimes OpEd, The Mysterious Stranger, has Howard Dean's name in it, but all the points in it apply more accurately to candidate Gov. George W. Bush. This is, in fact, the column one would have expected from a Broder during the 2000 campaign. Bush, the Andover, Harvard, and Yale man as Texas everyman. Yeah, right. Two term, governor promising a "humble" foreign policy and decrying nation building.

I wonder if when conservatives right these types of articles, are they laughing as they write, or do they really believe it?

On the other hand Bill Kristol's WaPo OpEd is one of the most levelheaded analyses' of Dean by a conservative. In 2000, it didn't matter that Gore was completely more qualified for office that Bush. And yet, he is alienating fiscal conservatives with his uncontrolled spending.

I, again, always wonder about the motivation of conservatives to write these type of articles, but it is hard to argue with any of Kristol's points.

Cutting Off the Nose to Spite the Face

The Cavalier Daily

I tend to believe somtimes that the NAACP leadership has too much time on its hands. This issue is ridiculous. The proliferation of the use of "nigger" in rap tunes is more of an issue than this. What is Julian Bond talking about, "My first impulse is that this should be a dismissible infraction -- but free speech protections I hold dear tell me that shouldn't be so," Bond wrote, adding that the administration "ought to disavow such language"

Julian, please don't talk. Just be a figurehead.

I recently had a back and forth with David Ehrenstein on Atrios's comment board concerning his use of "house nigger". I objected to it because I felt it unnecessary, "house slave" means the same thing, and out of place in that forum. We agreed to disagree. I am not for the wholesale, casual tossing around of that word. But let's be real. The issue of team names, especially the Redskins is one that most liberals probably agree on. This incident shouldn't provoke a campus wide racial sensitivity lesson.

Two unfortunate and underreported legacies of the OJ trial is the lessening of free speech where the "N-word" is concerned, and the increase in TV face time for Nancy Grace.

Michael Kelly couldn't be there, so why not Bartley?

Robert Bartley awarded Medal of Freedom

Is that over the top? If Bush/Rove read this, do they act, or do they brush it off as the ravings of any outsider? Do they operate under the "Who else would they vote for?" viewpoint, or are they starting to feel less and less secure about November '04?

I have often asked this of friends, what would be the motivation for someone who voted for Gore in '00 to vote for Bush in '04? At the beginning of the year, that motivation might have been the War on Terror (the real one, not the Iraqi escapades). But now with Iraq sucking up more and more foreign policy oxygen, and seeming more and more of a misguided adventure (I have a gift for understatement), why would anyone who supported Gore and switched to Bush after 9/11 continue to support Bush? Has Bush accomplished anything that would keep those Gore crossover supporters? I don't see it.

Now, as Miniter writes, if fiscal and Christian conservatives are contemplating not supporting him, where will his re-elect numbers be coming from?

Also, for Dems, the lost of the far left in '00 contributed greatly to Gore's defeat, (can't stand Nader). There does not exist any national show that showcases a liberal commentator in an unfiltered format. A show for Mr. Alterman would fill this need. At the time of its cancellation, the Phil Donahue Show was receiving ratings at least twice as high as any of your current shows. Can't get enough of 'em. The juicier the leak, the more sensitive the disclosure, the more likely you are to see it splashed on the front page.

But lately there have been a series of leaks that haven't gotten all that much attention outside of the conservative corner of the profession.

Which raises the following possibilities:

1) Mainstream reporters are sulking about having been beat.

2) The stories aren't all that great.

3) The establishment press reacts differently when conservatives break stories, assume it's part of the vast right-wing conspiracy and try to knock down the allegations.

I'm not an intelligence expert, and divining the finer points of the weight of evidence from spy reports about Iraq is obviously difficult, as the yearlong debate over WMD has shown. But I can't help but think that if some of these stories had been obtained by one of our mainstream media muckety-mucks, as opposed to Sean Hannity or the Weekly Standard, it would be treated as a much bigger deal.

The dismissive notion that conservatives leak to outlets on the right for ideological reasons ignores the fact that liberals often do the same thing with news organizations that are either left-of-center or likely to be sympathetic to the message being peddled.

Most leakers have self-serving motives. That doesn't mean the information they're peddling is marginal or bogus.

It's little wonder that some on the right are complaining once again about media bias.

Washington Times Editorial Page Editor Tony Blankley offers this sarcastic take:

"I am increasingly impressed with the calm, mature professionalism of the elite Washington/NewYork media.

"Only recently, and for several decades, the WashingtonPostNewYorkTimesCBSNBCABCCNN entities could not resist reporting dramatic national news -- even if the information came to them by informal or questionable methods...

"But in the last three weeks, a calm, self-restrained maturity has suddenly swept over what only last month still had been the gangly, youthful, irresponsible Washington/New York media elite. Three vastly embarrassing and newsworthy memos -- two from the Senate and one from the Pentagon -- came to light.

"But in each case, the shocking revelations were not revealed in the august pages and electrons of the newly mature media elite.

"In the remaining actual news gathering and reporting institutions (the Weekly Standard, The Washington Times, the New York Post, Fox News,Wall Street Journal Editorial Page, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh radio programs, et al.) those three leaked memos were substantively reported on and extensively quoted.

"For those of you who get your news from the WashingtonPostNewYorkTimesCBSetc., here is a summary of those three now half-famous memos: 1) Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee had drafted plans to use and misconstrue classified intelligence data to politically undercut the president of the United States ('pulling the trigger' closer to the election);

(2) the CIA and other intelligence offices of the government have identified 10 years of contacts between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden -- thus tending to dramatically justify our war against Iraq and contradicting one of the major Democratic Party criticisms of President Bush's Iraq policy; and 3) Democratic senators on the Judiciary Committee were working closely with outside groups to block judicial appointments for the purpose of ethnic bigotry and unethical manipulation of court proceedings. In Sen. Durbin's case, the memo advised that Miguel Estrada be blocked as he is 'especially dangerous because he is Latino.' ...

"In all three instances, the major media's articles on these explosive (and undenied) revelations led with a mature and responsible expression of shock at the questionable manner by which the memos were publicly revealed. They then respectfully quoted the embarrassed senators and government officials who were calling for a Justice Department investigation of the leak."

My issue here is that as media critic, Kurtz certainly should question whether something is being buried or not. But by what definition of journalism is a summary of old news now new news? That is the case with the Hayes story concerning the Feith memo. Feith testifed to the Senate Intelligence Committee, and the memo was the product of a request by the committee to summarize his testimony. His testimony had been reported on, his summary contained no new information. How is this news? Also, on what planet is Sean Hannity a journalist? The leak on the Intelligence committee strategy memo was given to Hannity to get it into the echo chamber as quickly as possible so as to pressure the mainstream press to write about it, thus legitimizing it. That they won't play ball on this one causes a hyperventilate by Howie. Even Fred Barnes on Fox's Special Edition with Brit Hume said that is was a non-story.

The biggest problem I have with Howie-con is that in his piece, he editorializes about the mainstream media's possible motives, then he quotes a spin-laden Tony Blankley column which contains a huge out-of-context quote. A staff memo to Durbin as quoted in the Wall Street Journal said,

"The groups singled out three--Jeffrey Sutton (6th Circuit); Priscilla Owen (5th Circuit); and Caroline [sic] Kuhl (9th Circuit)--as a potential nominee for a contentious hearing early next year, with a [sic] eye to voting him or her down in Committee. They also identified Miguel Estrada (D.C. Circuit) as especially dangerous, because he has a minimal paper trail, he is Latino, and the White House seems to be grooming him for a Supreme Court appointment. They want to hold Estrada off as long as possible."

Blankley wrote:

Democratic senators on the Judiciary Committee were working closely with outside groups to block judicial appointments for the purpose of ethnic bigotry and unethical manipulation of court proceedings. In Sen. Durbin's case, the memo advised that Miguel Estrada be blocked as he is 'especially dangerous because he is Latino.' ...

The reference in the staff memo obviously concerns Republican attempts to score points with the Latino community as opposed to being a bigotry. Kurtz could have, and should have addressed this. But instead he ran Blankley's quote without comment.

Howie can't have it both ways.

Wonder if Bush's royal newspaper reader will show him this column

Mourning in America

Two best lines:

Finally, there is an asymmetry to the administration's use of the military in presidential events. There were only one or two questions squeezed in on domestic issues at the end of the interview. Russert allowed Clark to address almost all of the oppo spin that has been levelled at him, with only token follow-up. While they weren't really softballs, they were easily answered, and allowed Clark to show off his communications skills.

I have to admit, I am supporting Clark since my real pick, Bob Graham dropped out. I view Clark as more than just the anti-Dean. I think the whole anti-Dean thing is a concept being forced on us by both the DLC and the RNC. I say the RNC because they have been the ones really pushing the "liberal Howard Dean" storyline. Anyone who has read a little on Dean knows that he is no liberal, and I think that Clark may be more of a liberal that Dean is. We will see.

Can the Right Wingers Intimidate HBO?

Probably not.

Frank Rich has a review of sorts on a new movie that truly addresses the Reagan AIDS legacy. While his article deals specifically with defense and foreign policy, it could be applied to the total set of Dean's view of various issues. Kagen argues that the view of Dean as a anti-war candidate is incorrect. He is, in fact, anti-Iraq War, but hawkish on many other issues. Well, Mr. Kagen, welcome to the party. Dean has been saying this all along. He has never declared himself to be an anti-war, anti-use of force candidate. He has always maintained that he simply disagrees with this war. The Republicans then proceeded to attempt to paint him as a peacenik liberal because the serves their electorial purposes. A moderate Dean that can still excite the independent and Democratic electorate is possibly the Bushies' worst nightmare.

Let's no be fooled, while George W. Bush ran a moderate general election campaign, he was elected by the blind rage induced desire of conservatives to retake the White House. Anger does work because it can get the butts to the polls, it can put energized volunteers in the streets and on the phones. On of the primary features of the modern conservative movement is their combativeness. At the Iowa Jefferson/Jackson Dinner, both John Kerry and John Edwards gave speeches attempting to tone down the anger of Dems with the current administration. IMHO, these guys want to lose. Why would you defuse the bomb that could very easily blow Bush out of the White House. Whomever the Dem nominee is, they will need that excitement to get out the vote.

Letter to Nicholas Kristof

I sent this to Nick.

Dear Mr Kristof,
After reading your column in today's NYTimes, I am left wondering whether we have both been living in the same America for the last twenty or so years. Your article leaves the impression that there are hordes of national media figures spewing left-wing vitrol and skewing the political discourse in the country. I have ask you where are those liberals? Where is the liberal equivalent of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, Neal Boortz? There's not a lot of radio time left after all of those guys.

Where are these hate speaking liberals on national television? On NBC, CBS or ABC, name one liberal with the national forum for discussing liberal ideas and applying negative spin to conservative issues? The only one close is, well there isn't anyone. The morning shows are considered liberal, but in reality they are puff television. Celebrities, weight lost and pop culture prefixed by five minutes of headlines. The Sunday talk shows showcase Tim Russert (not a liberal), Bob Schieffer (not a liberal), and George Stephanopolis (might be a liberal, but he doesn't play one on TV).

How about on cable, where is the liberal that has an unchallenged forum in the same way as Bill O'Reilly, Joe Scarborough, Neil Cavuto, Brit Hume, Tony Snow, or Michael Savage (I know). Well, there was Phil Donahue on MSNBC, whose ratings were double that of all the other shows. Oh yeah, his show was cancelled, and when it was on he was required to have a conservative as one of his guests. Where is that liberal? I'd like to watch his show.

I can only assume that you are referring to the bevy of liberal books that have been recently topping the best seller lists. Of course, that is only after years of books by conservatives that were usually as factually challenged as they were slanted to the right. The books by liberals, with the exception of Michael Moore (who says the he isn't a liberal), have been quite accurate, as most reviewers have noted. You did mention a New Republic article by Jonathan Chait, but you ignore that the majority of that article was a laundry list of issues, remember those, issues where liberals completely disagree with this president. Maybe you wrote this as a way to quell your editorial page colleague, Paul Krugman, whose has become a hero for his willingness to say what most of us are thinking.

Maybe you are referring to the Congress, where after several years of being both literally and figurative pushed around by the Republican majority, the Democrats are now fighting back. They are using the same parlimentary devices that were used against the previous administration. Where is the Democratic version of Orrin Hatch, who apparently doesn't see the hypocrisy in changing blue slip rules depending on the party in power. This from the group who argued in Florida that you shouldn't change the rules in the middle of the game? Today, the Republicans begin a 30 hour session where they reportedly will not allow the Democratic senators to speak. I don't recall the Democrats doing anything similar to this in recent history.

Sir, before you can make an argument of equivalence between the conservatives' actions in the last two decades, and the recent pushback by liberals, we will need to see a questionable impeachment push, a Bush murder list, a liberal radio network with 30 million listeners and accusations of lesbianism against Laura Bush. Don't hold your breath.

Did I miss anything?

Hardball with Chris Matthews’ for Nov. 4

MATTHEWS: Why is it always anti-right? I mean, I’ve been waiting for 50 or 70 years for an anticommunist movie to come out of Hollywood. There’s a zillion anti-Nazi movies. How about one or two anticommunist movies?
Let me ask you, Ann Coulter. Do you think the Clintons would make a good-what do you call it-a good property for a mini-series? And could it be done fairly?
COULTER: It would have been done, if it had been done honestly, I think extremely well. And I agree with you that they’re capable of doing an honest movie that extrapolates slightly but basically gets the characters right.
And I’ll give you an example of one where they did it with hatred in their hearts, but unfortunately, they did it accurate to history, and that was “Patton.” That was intended to make Patton look terrible, but it was accurate to history and it made Patton look great and people loved him. And that’s why they don’t do it accurately any more.
MATTHEWS: You are dead wrong. Everybody loved “Patton” from the first day it came out.
COULTER: But that isn’t the way it was intended.
MATTHEWS: I was in the Peace Corps in Africa and everybody over there loved it when we got to see it. From the first day we loved it.
CORN: How could you not love that movie from the opening scene?
MATTHEWS: He’s God-like. Ann, where do you get this malarkey from?
Everybody loved “Patton.” How old were you, when “Patton” came out. How old were you, two?
COULTER: I think you’re misunderstanding.
MATTHEWS: No, I think you’re wrong, Ann. I think everybody loved “Patton.”
COULTER: Can I respond?
MATTHEWS: Who didn’t like it?
COULTER: That is precisely my point, because it was made accurately.
But it was made, the people making it were intending to make Patton look bad.
MATTHEWS: Who did that?
COULTER: That is why George C. Scott turned down his Academy Award for playing Patton.
MATTHEWS: Who told you that? Who told you that?
COULTER: It’s well known.
MATTHEWS: It’s well known?
COULTER: Why do you think he didn’t accept the award?
CORN: Why did he take the role? Why did he take the role, Ann, if he didn’t want to do it?
COULTER: Why do you think he turned down the award, Chris? You never looked that up? It never occurred to you? “I wonder why George C. Scott didn’t accept his award.”
MATTHEWS: Because he said he wasn’t going to a meat parade, because he didn’t believe in award ceremonies because they’re all about women wearing no clothes and showing off their bodies...
COULTER: By portraying Patton as negatively as possible, but by doing it accurately the American people loved it.
MATTHEWS: Facts mean nothing to you, Ann.
CORN: In this movie he shoots down an airplane with a gun.
MATTHEWS: I’m glad you are not making movies, Ann Coulter. Thank you, David Corn, Andrew Grossman.
Jesus.

Nothing to add.

By the By

While searching for info on Bush's position on the Confederate Flag, I found this quote in the North County Times made on or around 4/21/2000:

The character of the current administration has let the country down, Bush told reporters. Dean has been using this Confederate Flag line often, but now some of the other candidates are using it in an attempt to hurt him.

The amount of spin that is necessary to make his comment an issue defies physics. He is talking about expanded the electorate in the South for Democrats. Everyone knows that is he is saying. And yet they all are reacting as it this could be the derailing of his campaign.

It is amazing that this is what the national media is latching onto as a problem issue for Dean. It would be interesting to go back and find how many columns were written about George W. Bush and his deflection of the Confederate flag issue. This is also an issue where the maverick McCain wasn't such a maverick. Bush dodged it completely with very little critisism from the national press. At the Republican Debate in West Columbia, SC on Jan 7, 2000 this was the exchange between Bush and a questioner:

Q: At the South Carolina state capitol building, the Confederate flag flies with the state flag and the US flag. Does the flag offend you personally?

A: I believe the people of SC can figure out what to do with this flag issue. I don’t believe it’s the role of someone from outside SC to come into this state and tell the people of SC what to do [about] the flag.

Q: As an American citizen, do you have a visceral reaction?

A: As an American citizen, I trust the people of SC to make the decision for SC.

Dean gets constant negative coverage for expressing a desire to bring different faces into the Democratic Party. Bush paid no price for having no spine.

Junior Wingnuts

Normally, I look at one of these stories and laugh at the lack of respect for authority. But, this time its at my daughter's school, Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando. So the Liberty Counsel feels that the students' rights are being denied. Standards be damned. The principal doesn't have the right to say that these float themes cross the line. No one is saying that the groups can't have floats, just that the theme's are inappropriate for a homecoming parade.

At what point do these people risk doing what the far left did to the Democratic party in the 70's. There is such a thing as moving too far to the extremes. The pep rally and homecoming parade is not the venue to fight the culture wars.

And since they brought it up, I am of the feeling that the First Amendment Freedom of Speech right is the most abused of the big ten. Freedom of speech rights keep you out of jail, and/or protect you from retribution by the government for speak out against them. That's it. It doesn't apply to CBS not airing the Reagan movie, or kids putting a controversial float in a school parade. This is one of the most misunderstood and/or abused aspects of the Constitution. If I am wrong, someone please enlighten me. Yesterday, the now ex-chief domestic policy adviser Jay Lefkowitz responded. I can't find his response, but Kinsley's current op-ed, Kabuki and Stem Cells seems to address the response.

What I like about Kinsley's article though is this,

The distinguishing feature of modern Washington dishonesty is that it is almost transparent, barely intended to deceive. It uses true-ish factoids to construct an implied assertion about reality that is not just false but preposterous. Modern Washington dishonesty is more like a kabuki ritual than a realistic, Western-style performance. The goal is not to persuade but merely to create an impression that there are two sides to the question without actually having to supply one of them.

This is possibly the best description of the current Washington (GOP) view of principalled debate that I have seen. Actual truth doesn't matter, only preceived truth. This is what the GOP has been developing over the last twenty years, a method of debate that pays passing homage to the truth. Debate that seems like it could be true, but upon closer examination is grossly dishonest.

What Kinsley leaves out is the complicity of the press in this strategy. With their horserace mentality, they don't bother to closely question the claims being made. They simply report them as is. As others before me have said, this is an abdication of the press' fourth column responsibilities.

Let's Get Eric a Show

Eric Alterman, of Altercation says that he could produce better TV ratings than any of the current crop of MSNBC and CNBC political shows. Eric writes:

Hey Guys, Can I Have a Show? I could do as well as that and I’d probably be cheaper. You guys just provide the cameras, the food, the liquor and some walking-around-money. I’ll do the guests and do a really cool show, particularly compared with Mathews. (And unlike Chris, I promise not to talk about the penis size of either Bush or Clinton...)

(via Drudge):

MSNBC HARDBALL 0.3
MSNBC OLBERMANN 0.3
MSNBC SCARBOROUGH 0.3
CNBC BRIAN WILLIAMS 0.3
MSNBC ABRAMS 0.2
CNBC KUDLOW/KRAMER 0.2
CNBC BARTIROMO 0.2

Now I understand that his post is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I think that it is a great idea. So, I am starting an email campaign, low tech, to launch the "Altercation - The TV Series" show. I think that this will do two things. It possibly get Eric a show and it could show the willingness of liberals and progressives to support a show that truly addresses our views.

So, here's how it will be done. We are going to be making use of good old cut and paste, and email hyperlinks.

Click the following link to create your email, the subject should read "Altercation - The TV Show".

MSNBC-TV

Now copy the following paragraph into your e-mail:

Dear MSNBC Viewer Services:
This message is my show of support for the S.O.C. website sponsored campaign to create a TV show featuring Eric Alterman of Altercation on MSNBC.com. Mr. Alterman's writing experience in politics and media analysis, combined with his solid liberal credentials would give your network the chance to attract a currently underserved group, loyal American liberals and progressives. There does not exist any national show that showcases a liberal commentator in an unfiltered format. A show for Mr. Alterman would fill this need. At the time of its cancellation, the Phil Donahue Show was receiving ratings at least twice as high as any of your current shows. A show featuring Mr. Alterman would very likely do just as well, if not better, due to the prevailing feeling amongst liberals that our views are being overlooked for more conservative oriented fare.

Then, add any additional comments that you might have to this, and send it to MSNBC. If the numbers are high enough, then we should get their attention. A show for Eric preferably, or at least the realization that there are a lot of us who where upset when Donahue was cancelled. Not because we worshipped Donahue, but that he was the only liberal with a show.

So, lets do this. Maybe Eric won't mind. Think I should tell him?

"Luskin is a Stalker" day on Tuesday.
So saith Neal

Tom Tomorrow at This Modern World lets us know that Neal Pollock has declared Tuesday as "Luskin Is A Stalker" day. A good example is his WaPo column,Swift-Footed W., a study of Bush's actions in foreign policy thru the lens of Homer's The Iliad. It tends to accomplish its task of throwing a few punches at the administration without sounding shrill or terribly partisan. But the problem I have with it is the following line:

Yet over the last few weeks, there have been a few hints of a rosy-fingered dawn, signs that President Bush may be learning from his mistakes and moderating his impulsiveness. I'm hoping that's the case, and it's reassuring to remember what happened in the last electoral cycle: Mr. Bush turned his campaign upside-down after his loss to John McCain in New Hampshire in 2000.

What most of us remember about Bush's conduct after his defeat in New Hampshire to McCain is one of the dirtiest episodes in recent Presidential election history. The push polling in South Carolina represented a new low, and that type of behavior doesn't lend itself to comparisons with Greek epic poetry. I don't know how Kristof can reference that race without acknowledge the win at all costs mindset that became evident in South Carolina and even more so in the general election.

Short term memory loss.

Futility

I have labelled this post "Futility", because it seems that whatever is discovered, or whatever is written is brushed aside as the Bushies continue, somewhat successfully, to minimize the Iraq/WMD issue. The latest column O' revelations comes from Sy Hersh of the New Yorker (link via Talking Points Memo)
Hersh's column points out the extent to which this administration circumvented the CIA to get intelligence data that would support their claims of Iraq's WMD activities. Now contrast that with this David Ignatius article from the WPost. Ignatius takes the route of blaming the CIA for all of the intelligence failures without mentioning the existence of groups within the Pentagon, the Vice President's office, and even the State Dept. that were doing their own intelligence analyses to provide the President with data.

I have a feeling that the Agency won't take too kindly to this type of piece, and that more leaks will be forthcoming. Anyway, why am I outing Mr. Hannity, who is the most reliable purveyor of fine RNC spin, as a "lying bastard"? Well, I tuned into his radio program at about 5:10pm EST, where I found him promoting the following discredited spin points:

Gen. Wesley Clark said that the White House asked him to say something to link Saddam to 9/11.

Gen. Clark said good things about the Bush administration. (Which is true, but he didn't say that Clark was complimenting them on Afghanistan. Hannity's patter made it sound like he was referring to Iraq, which is riduculous because Clark said this in January 2002, possibly even before the "Axis of Evil" State of the Union address

Newt Gingrich shows that Clark contradicted his book "Waging Modern War" with his new book "Winning Modern Wars". A Washington Monthly article by Clark (link via Tapped) shows that he is consistent.

Valerie Plame had been outed as a covert agent prior to the Novak column.

At this point I turned off my radio and checked my watch. It was 5:19. In about nine minutes, Hannity worked in five dubious spin points, some of which could just be considered out and out lies. I have always had a theory about Hannity. He has some ego issues, and I always have felt that he is the guy that could be drawn into a debilitating debate by simply attacking his credibility. In the early ninties, some people did that with Rush, but I think Rush was better equipped to ignore it. Hannity is always harping about some attacking him. I guess questioning his information is attacking him. Whatever. At any rate, I think this would be a much more fruitful project than the transcribing Rush effort. The difference between Rush and Sean is that Rush created spin, and Hannity parrots it.

Lying bastard. (Just in case someone does that search.)

Bar, What have we created?

Chicago Tribune | Bush Sr. sends Jr. a thinly veiled dispatch

Maybe I am just being a partisan, but this has got to be the most interesting story of the day. That leads me to believe that getting Condi Rice a boyfriend is in some way a controversial topic. Which in turn leads to a question that I have been asking friends from time to time. Is it strange that a highly successful woman, who it can be argued is an attractive woman, has never been married? I'm not trying to start any rumors here, just trying to deduce something based on available evidence.
Anyway, for those of you missing Boondocks this week, here are the links to the strips. And the conservatives were voting for a Republican in the state house, otherwise they would have supported McClintock.

Eight Months Too Late

E. All the evidence of a rush to a war that was disengeniously sold to the American people was available in January, and everything that we have learned lately simply verifies this. They are throwing any even basic level of honesty and credibility out of the window. Based on their callers, I fear they will succeed in this.

By the by, I called my local wing-nut talk show host, Shannon Burke in Orlando, this morning to question his attempt to portrait Wilson as some type of partisan activist. Everytime he said Clinton appointee, I said acting Iraq ambassador under Bush I and a career diplomat under Reagan. Bush's $87B funding request. In an article entitled "Cheap Shots", Beinart writes,

Throughout the summer, Democrats rightly slammed the Bush administration for minimizing the difficulty of rebuilding Iraq. "It's been hide the ball every step of the way," fumed Senator Kent Conrad in July. "They've consistently understated the cost by a factor of several-fold." Two weeks later, Office of Management and Budget chief Joshua Bolten's refusal to estimate the costs of occupation led Senator Joseph Biden to ask, "When are you guys starting [sic] to be honest with us?"

Biden got his answer on September 7. In his speech that night, President Bush did what Democrats had been demanding: He abandoned the fiction that Iraq could be rebuilt on the cheap. His $87 billion request even included new money for Afghanistan, where Democrats had hammered his insufficient commitment to nation-building.

You'd think Democrats would have applauded the president's conversion, perhaps even claimed credit for it. Instead, leading Democrats responded to Bush's U-turn with one of their own. With the polls showing that a majority of Americans, and a huge majority of Democrats, don't want to spend more money on Iraq, prominent Democrats decided Bush was too committed to nation-building. Almost overnight, it was Democrats who wanted to reconstruct Iraq on the cheap.

I wonder how much of Beinart's position is motivated by how wrong he and other NR writers were in first place. The Dems have definitely been using this to political advantage, (Robert Byrd has been making CSPAN must see TV) and I don't have a problem with that, but they have also indicated that they will OK the request. Beinart seems to want to perpetuate the soft on defense meme despite all evidence to the contrary. There is nothing wrong with making the administration sweat, and the only way that has occurred is when they have been forced to defend their actions and their words against the current facts on the ground.

If the Dems don't approve the funding, then Beinart has cause, but at this point in the process it really just sounds like sour grapes.

The Dangers of Post-war Stress

This line in Richard Cohen's WP editorial makes me think that someone should lock the White House liquor cabinets.

The man who strode to the U.N. rostrum seemed to know that. SoS Powell was asked the following

QUESTION: Secretary Powell, there is a general feeling and consensus that the new American administration is prioritizing the Iraq issue than the Israeli-Arab conflict, which is the priority in the Arab agenda. So, I'd like your comment.

SECRETARY POWELL: No, I don't think that's accurate. I think the Bush administration is trying to look at the whole region as a priority and that you can't separate out these pieces-they're all linked. One rather significant change in emphasis in the new administration is that we are talking to our friends about all the issues in the region and not just one issue being more important than the others. Hannity said that he has made up his mind on the recall. At an appropriate time, he will check the polls, and if Schwarzenegger is ahead, he will endorse him. If McClintock is ahead, he will endorse him. The strategy seems to be to do whatever is necessary to defeat Cruz Bustamenta, Anybody But the Latino.
You may feel that this interpretation of Hannity's decision is cheap, racial politics, but I feel it is consistent with the argument made by Hannity, and other Republicans, that the effort to defeat Miguel Estrada was motivated by a desire to keep a Hispanic nominee off of the appeals court. That's the one the should have clicked all the lights on. Spinning Out of Control (S.O.C.) is my attempt to add my voice to all the other liberal and progressive bloggers that have issues with the direction this country is going, and the motivations of this administration. This article by E.J. Dionne, Do Jobs Not Matter Anymore? (washingtonpost.com), is a good place to start.

Dionne discusses the need to return to a demand-side, or labor friendly view for our economic prosperity. He hits a home run in pointing out that the current jobless recovery, if there is indeed a recovery occurring, is the result of 25 years of supply-side theory moving the focus from the importance of high employment to enlarging the so-called investor class. A must read for the upcoming campaign battles on the economy.

This is new.
